Best friends are like…

…A slice of warm apple pie with a scoop of cinnamon ice cream.

They are sweet and comforting with just the right touch of spice.

…A soft fuzzy blanket.

They wrap themselves around you and give you a place to hide when things get hard.

…An echo.

They always come back to you even if they’ve been gone for awhile.

…A heart.

Not a box to hold you in. Not a triangle with one point above the others.

Not a circle with an empty center. But rather a heart with two sides exactly the same,

full at the top and together at the bottom making the heart what it is.

In between is lots of space for love.

… A Mirror

Not a shadow that only comes around when the sun is shining.

But rather a looking glass where

you can find yourself even when the clouds hide the sun.

…A Treasure

More precious than gold, more enduring than diamonds and softer than silk.

If you have just one, you are rich beyond the means of kings.

…Music, Especially Music!

With a melody you hear with your heart for always.

Sometimes we all feel lonely, forgotten and sad.

Sometimes we all feel like we don’t have a friend in the world.

Then the phone rings or an email arrives or a note comes in the mail.

This is when you make a list of your best friends.

Not in any particular order.

Then you’ll find yourself with a big slice of warm apple pie

with cinnamon ice cream, while you snuggle

beneath a warm fuzzy blanket,

listening to the echo of laughter and secrets

kept tucked away safely forever and always,

and you’ll feel your heart fill up with a love that you know is mirrored

in the names on your list and you’ll treasure this wonderful feeling

while you feel your loneliness and sadness disappear.

That is what best friends are like.
